Ken Block’s Hoonicorn is a beast. Despite being built to go sideways and pull off spectacular tire-melting donuts, the 1,400-horsepower, four-wheel drive 1965 Mustang is capable of defeating just about anything in a straight line, including an Mclaren Senna, Rob Dahm’s four. rotor RX-7, and even a fully prepared drag car. It is no surprise, then, to see a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 needing a huge handicap to achieve a victory against its highly modified brother.
The GT500, our 2021 Performance Car of the Year, is not sloppy. Thanks to a supercharged 760 horsepower V-8 and a quick-change dual-clutch transmission, he is able to do some extremely fast times on the track – for a production car, at least.
In direct resistance to the Hoonicorn, it is left in the dust, with a gap of several cars when it reaches the finish line. It is a similar story when the two cars start to run. The GT500 is only able to beat the 1400 horsepower missile on wheels when it receives a generous start and Block starts from an excavation.
