The promised investment in the Ohio assembly plant at Avon Lake was made during the 2019 contract negotiations. The factory currently has about 1,700 hourly workers, producing Ford E-series vans and Super Duty pickups.

Kariem said the UAW asked Ford employees to explain the decision, but has received limited information so far.

Factory manager Jason Moore sent a letter to workers saying that conditions around the promised expansion have changed. Ford is investing in the Avon Lake plant and will increase production of Super Duty trucks there, said Moore.

Ford spokesman Kelli Felker declined to say which vehicle the company plans to manufacture in Mexico.
