For Heaven’s Sake’s True Crime Series Investigates Archived Cases

The great-nephew of a man who disappeared from his cabin wearing a suit, dress shoes and a felt hat in 1934 tries to open one of Canada’s oldest archived cases in a series of real crimes

  • Harold Heaven mysteriously disappeared from his remote lakeside cabin in Minden, Ontario, about two hours northeast of Toronto, in October 1934
  • Ontario Provincial Police investigators at the time considered his death a suicide – although his body was never found
  • His family, however, never believed in the decision to commit suicide.
  • Now, his great-nephew, great-grandfather Mike Mildon – who is admittedly inexperienced in investigations – has taken over the case
  • Mildon and his best friend Jackson Rowe are the filmmakers behind the new series, For Heaven’s Sake, which aims to find out what happened to heaven

Two amateur investigators took over one of Canada’s oldest archived cases, as part of a new series of documentaries on real crimes, in an attempt to find out what happened to a man who disappeared without a trace from his cabin 87 years ago.

Harold Heaven mysteriously disappeared from his remote lakeside cabin in Minden, Ontario, about two hours northeast of Toronto, in October 1934.

Heaven, whose cabin door was left open with an oil lamp still lit inside, disappeared with his rifle.

He would have disappeared wearing a suit, dress shoes and a felt hat.

The police searched the nearby forest and dredged the adjacent lake, but Heaven was never found or heard from again.

At the time, Ontario Provincial Police investigators considered his death a suicide – although his body was never found.

His family, however, never believed in the decision to commit suicide.

Now, his great-nephew, great-grandfather Mike Mildon – who is admittedly inexperienced in investigations – has taken over the case.

Mildon, along with his best friend Jackson Rowe, are the filmmakers behind the new eight-part series, For Heaven’s Sake, which aims to find out exactly what happened to Heaven eight decades ago.

As he grew up, Mildon heard theories about the disappearance of his great-grandfather from several generations.

Among the theories transmitted is that Heaven came into conflict with road workers who built a highway near their hut.

The series trailer highlights how some believe Heaven’s body may have been buried under the highway or thrown into the lake near its hut.

Mildon and Rowe’s claim to fame before the series was a Funny or Die series called Trophy Husbands, which had nearly 5,000 views on YouTube at the time of filming.

The series, despite being based on a real crime, has a comic streak as the two amateur investigators try to unravel the mystery of Mildon’s family.

The two, who are true fans of the crime, eventually managed to gain access to the 1934 police report related to the disappearance of Paraíso.

They also interviewed several members of the Heaven family, including Mildon’s grandfather, and tried to track down people who had direct knowledge of the search party.

The full series For Heaven’s Sake is currently being broadcast on CBS ‘new streaming service, Paramount +.
