While Oklahoma Sooners’ talent in the running back position was certainly not an issue during the off-season, depth was another matter. Fortunately, OU found an answer in the form of Tennessee’s Eric Gray transfer. Making development even more enjoyable is the fact that the Memphis native chose the Sooners over Red River’s rival Texas Longhorns.
Gray is the third Tennessee player to choose Norman in recent weeks, joining offensive Wanya Morris and safety Key Lawrence.
During two seasons in Knoxville, the Gray 5’10, 205 pounds ran for 1,311 yards, including 772 during his sophomore campaign. However, versatility is the name of the game for the former four-star player, as he also contributed 30 receptions for 254 yards last season. He is restless and incredibly effective in short bursts, and his ability to change direction is one of his greatest assets. Although he is not necessarily known for his straight-line speed, he is not deficient in that department.
New transfer by RB Eric Gray to The House.
This 94-yard TD race during his freshman season against Vanderbilt is currently the tenth longest in SEC history. And his 246 yards in that game is that of a real freshman in Tennessee history.#BoomerSoonerpic.twitter.com/j8Po8A5IM5

With Kennedy Brooks re-entering the fold in 2021, it’s safe to expect the seasoned and battle-tested to be the top newbie. However, Gray will certainly not be lacking in snaps, as his versatility will allow him to be on the field with OU’s other backs – whether in defense or out of it. He is also more than capable of holding the position for several snaps at the same time and causing damage between tackles.
With a backfield of Brooks, Gray, Marcus Major and Seth McGowan, the Sooners now have a capable contributor for every situation and depth to breathe easily.
