Flyers’ Claude Giroux, Justin Braun added to NHL’s COVID protocol list

About four hours after Tuesday’s Flyers-Capitals game was officially postponed, Claude Giroux and Justin Braun were placed on the NHL’s COVID protocol list. The NHL updates the list every day at about 5 pm Eastern Time.

Flyers currently have three players out because of the COVID protocol. Travis Sanheim has been sidelined since Sunday, when he lost the Flyers’ 7-4 victory over the Capitals under the COVID protocol.

There are several factors that contribute to why a player can be placed on the list of COVID protocols. A player absent because of the COVID protocol does not necessarily mean that the player’s test is positive for the coronavirus.

The Flyers are not scheduled to play again until Sunday, when they must visit Rangers (6 pm ET / NBCSP). The club’s home games on Thursday and Saturday against Devils were postponed on Monday, as Devils currently has 19 players on the COVID protocol list.

From the start of 8-3-2 to the 2020-21 season, the Flyers had four players placed on the COVID protocol list. Shayne Gostisbehere missed the first six Flyers games after testing positive for COVID-19.

“These are tough times. You can do everything right and still hire COVID,” said Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher on February 2. “I think we are all trying to be careful, I think the players recognize how fortunate we are to be back playing, playing, competing for the Stanley Cup, earning a salary. There are tough times out there and I don’t think anyone is taking it for granted.

“I think we all try to make the adjustments we need to make in terms of following the protocols and rules … I think everyone is willing to make these sacrifices for the right to play and the privilege to play. But there will be cases from time to time when. We have to be vigilant and we will have to be prepared for the unexpected at any time. “
