Florida State, Syracuse’s next male basketball opponent, postponed his last game because of Covid

Syracuse, NY – Syracuse’s men’s basketball team is scheduled to play in the state of Florida on Wednesday at the Carrier Dome. But a positive Covid-19 result in the Seminoles program undermines the contest.

The ACC announced Friday night that the FSU game against Duke, scheduled for today in Tallahassee, would be postponed due to subsequent quarantine and contact tracking within the Seminoles program.

The state of Florida, like all ACC basketball teams, is using microchip technology that can help determine the extent of quarantines after a positive Covid test surface. The chips, which male SU players are wearing in the pockets of their training and game shorts, helped solve a case of Syracuse Covid when only part of the Orange team was quarantined after SU’s second break for Covid this season.

In this case, Buddy Boeheim, Chaz Owens and a group of walk-ons were quarantined because they were found close to the infected person; SU even played his game against Niagara.

It usually takes a few days to sort the data compiled by these microchips before a specific quarantine list is defined.

SU is stepping out of its own quarantined Covid situation. A test or positive tests within the Buffalo program caused Orange to stop basketball activities after the December 19 Carrier Dome contest. UB was not using microchip technology in this game. SU postponed three subsequent games (Notre Dame, Wake Forest, North Carolina) after the Bulls left the city.

Orange hoped to play again on January 6. A Syracuse spokesman said on Thursday that Orange players returned to training with their position coaches.

It will be difficult to invent postponed games this season. ACC spokesman Andy Fledderjohann and SU athletic director John Wildhack said in recent weeks that the conference will try to match teams whose opponents have similar breaks, but the tight timeline limits will make most of these games impossible to reschedule. .

“As the schedule progresses, the conference office will be as flexible as possible and will analyze any potential vacancies and work with schools to find alternative options,” said Fledderjohann by email last week. “But if it is not possible to find a new date that works for both schools, the game will not be rescheduled, which is something we knew was a possibility at the beginning of the season.”

Syracuse played an ACC game this season; hit Boston College on the road on December 12.

note: Before the FSU-Duke game was postponed, Duke announced that his head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, would not accompany the team to Tallahassee due to a Covid quarantine situation unrelated to his team’s travel group:
