Flashback scenes from episode 8 have always been a priority

The WandaVision writer says that the flashback scenes from episode 8 were instrumental in telling the story of the series and the transformation of Wanda into Scarlet Witch.

WandaVision Writer Laura Donney revealed that episode 8 flashback sequences have always been a priority for the series. After the end of episode 7 and the great revelation of Agnes’s true identity, WandaVision went back to the past for its penultimate episode. The episode, entitled “Previously On”, accompanied Wanda and Agatha as they explored Wanda’s youth and the resulting trauma. Wanda’s pain has always been at the center of WandaVision, but episode 8 delved deeply into why Wanda is who she is.

The episode started with Wanda going back to Sokovia, revealing that her love for sitcoms comes from the TV nights she had with her family as a child. During one of those nights, however, Wanda and Pietro’s parents are killed and the brothers are forced to hide under the bed for two days while they wait for a bomb to explode in their living room. The episode then goes through several other events, including the amplification of Wanda’s powers thanks to Pedra da Mente and a formative moment in the relationship of Wanda and Vision.

It all ends with the revelation of how Wanda started Hex, and Donney says that these flashbacks have always been essential in telling Wanda’s story. Donney cited an experience with his own therapist that shaped some of the writing in WandaVision. She goes on to say that the writers have invested in spending time with Wanda in their past to make sense of their future. Donney ends by saying that the response to the episode was overwhelming for her and her fellow writers.

Wanda’s pain has always been at the center of WandaVision and, as the series pulled back the curtain, the show helped viewers understand how and why Wanda came to Westview. Of course, all this culminates in his transformation into the Scarlet Witch and his use of Chaos Magic at the end of WandaVision episode 8. With the show potentially defining Wanda as a villain, it’s a good thing that explored in depth how Wanda got to where she is.

With only one episode left, WandaVision it seems to have reached all the points necessary to really give Wanda Maximoff the story she deserves, especially if she is turning into one of the main villains of Phase 4 of the MCU. It’s difficult to balance the bombastic style of the Marvel cinematic universe with more grounded stories about grief and trauma, but WandaVision Episode 8 shows that there is room for stories like this in the largest cinematic universe in the world.
