The Fitbit’s hardware is solid, but the software is what really makes the company’s smartwatches and trackers so good. It’s one of the things we’re looking forward to most about Google’s acquisition of Fitbit, and if a company search can be believed, a new level of cheaper subscription may be in the works.
The staff of Android Central captured a Fitbit survey that asks users to evaluate a “new potential service offering”. From there, he describes the current free Fitbit level, which provides essential statistics such as step count, exercise tracking, sleep scores and health metrics. Then, of course, there’s Fitbit Premium, a $ 9.99 / month subscription that offers a lot more data and options for managing your health.
Apparently, Fitbit is preparing to launch a third level of subscription, which costs $ 2.99 per month. That’s a fraction of the cost of the regular Premium plan, and as such, this plan doesn’t really add a ton of additional data. It simply provides users with additional historical data from the information you can see in the free plan. Fitbit describes the potential new plan as:
See your activity, sleep, stress and health metrics for the last month, year, forever with unlimited historical data.
As it stands, the free Fitbit plan will only allow access to the last 30 days (or at least 7 days for some metrics) of your health and fitness data. Such a plan would allow users who only need this information to have a much more accessible way of doing so.
According to the terms of the Fitbit acquisition, Google is not permitted to use Fitbit user data to sell or target ads. Therefore, it is very possible that Google could use affordable subscriptions like these to increase revenue for old and new Fitbit users. Notably, Fitbit extended some Premium features to free users just this month.
