First, they protected Roger Stone. So they joined the attack on the Capitol.

At least six people who provided security for Roger Stone entered the Capitol during the January 6 attack, according to a New York Times investigation.

The videos show the group guarding Mr. Stone, a longtime friend of former President Donald J. Trump, on the day of the attack or the day before. All six are associated with Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government militia that is known for providing security for right-wing personalities and demonstrators at public events.

Mr. Stone, a convicted criminal who was pardoned by Mr. Trump, has a long history as a self-proclaimed “dirty cheater” political agent who lived by the decrees of attack, admits nothing, denies everything and counterattacks. He posted an online message denying involvement in “illegal acts on Capitol Hill”.

We combed through hundreds of videos and photos, and we used research by an online monitoring group called Capitol Terrorists Exposers to track down the security team that surrounded Mr. Stone on January 5 and 6.

That’s how they went from storing it to the Capitol building on January 6.

On January 5, the day before the attack on the Capitol, Stone makes two public appearances in Washington in support of Trump’s baseless allegations about electoral fraud. Six of the people we focus on are providing security for Mr. Stone. Five of them are seen with Mr. Stone in the video below.

On the afternoon of January 5, after a speech at the United States Supreme Court, Stone is led by one of the six Oath Keepers in question, while others in the group keep the crowd at bay.

That night, Mr. Stone speaks at another rally near the White House, in which he proclaims that “We will win this fight or America will enter a thousand years of darkness.” Several of the Oath Keepers we tracked continue to provide security for him at this event.

On the morning of January 6, Mr. Stone is seen in front of the Willard InterContinental hotel, one block from the White House. Guard 6 is seen with Mr. Stone here.

This is the last time Stone is seen that day in any of the footage analyzed by The New York Times. He continues to promote speeches and rallies online that he says he will do near the Capitol that afternoon. But he never comes. He now says he just stayed at the hotel.

Then, the videos show all six security guards inside the Capitol building during the attack. Some meet with other Oath Keepers, including two who have been accused of conspiracy. Others are seen in the corridors.

On February 10, Mr. Stone posted an online statement saying that he “saw no evidence of illegal activity on the part of any member” of the Oath Keepers, and that if there was evidence, “they should be prosecuted”.
