First call: real chances for Deshaun Watson to join Steelers; NFL salary cap update

Do you want Deshaun Watson’s real chances of ending the Steelers? We got them.

We also have some NFL salary cap projections. Happy return to Joe Musgrove. And an update on Robert Morris hockey.

All of this on Wednesday’s “First Call”.

Watson Watch

Pittsburgh sports radio is gaining momentum when it comes to talks about the prospect of the Steelers negotiating with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson is not happy with the property in Houston, and they say he can ask for an exchange.

How are outsiders seeing the prospect of Watson coming to Pittsburgh? Well, Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr ranked the Steelers in fourth place among Watson’s most likely destinations if it is traded. He thinks the New York Jets is the most likely landing spot. Followed by the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins.

Other vehicles are less optimistic about Pittsburgh’s chances. Athletic’s Mike Sando did not place Pittsburgh among the top five potential teams that could go after the NFL leader. But he agreed with Orr’s assessment that the Jets would be the main contenders, and he also had Miami and San Francisco in the mix.

As for the chance makers, they are not very enthusiastic about the Steelers’ chances of making this deal. BetOnline.Ag is putting the odds on 1/20 for Pittsburgh as Watson’s likely new home – if he ever dealt. Seventeen teams are ahead of the Steelers.

In case you are curious – as I was – the Patriots are 9/1. I see value for money there.

Help. But not much

As we all know, the Steelers are facing a wage cap problem.

In fact, the whole team will feel a pinch. According to ProFootballTalk, thanks in large part to covid-19, the league expects the maximum number of 2021 to reach about $ 180 million per franchise (compared to $ 198.2 million in 2020). Teams like the Steelers would be in trouble, even if the limit went up a bit, because they have a large class of free agents. So this is bad news.

But it could be worse. The league and the NFLPA have already stated that the salary cap could reach $ 175 million. This would represent a drop of $ 23.2 million per club.

As PFT reports, “Many homeowners … don’t want to delay the full impact of the 2020 losses. They see it as an interest-free loan to players. And that mindset would push the final number closer to $ 175 million. ”

Good for Joe

Former Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove has never been an equal return for Gerrit Cole. Nor did anyone else Pirates bought from Houston in that business.

But Musgrove was always a nice guy while in Pittsburgh. He always played hard and had a positive attitude, despite the many losses to the franchise during his three years here.

So it’s nice to see you so happy with the exchange that you sent him back to his hometown, San Diego Padres.

It is especially good because your father – who has a lot of health problems – will now find it easier to see him throw.

There was a homecoming in the other direction as part of the trade as well. San Diego is sending right-handed pitcher David Bednar back to the Pittsburgh area. He’s from Mars, dad.

They also hosted outfielder Hudson Head and pitchers Omar Cruz and Drake Fellows of the Fathers. Receiver Endy Rodriguez came from the Mets as part of the three-way switch.

‘All good things …’

The 17ºHockey team Robert Morris won a point Tuesday night in Erie. But his winning streak ended in six.

The Colonials lost 3-2 in overtime to Mercyhurst. The Lakers won Gueorgui Feduolov’s game 34 seconds from the end of the extra session.

Nick Lalonde and Cameron Hebert scored in the loss to the Colonials. Derek Schooley’s next club plays RIT in Rochester on Saturday night. Then they fight Mercyhurst again in a series at home and at home next Friday (January 29) on the road and Saturday (January 30) at the Island Sports Center.
