First call: Chase Claypool reiterates Browns’ criticism; Zach Banner may be back. Matt Canada to Miami?

For Friday’s “First Call”, Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Chase Claypool cannot get out of his own way. The Steelers may have to fight to keep Matt Canada on the team. And facing Zach Banner seems optimistic about his future in Pittsburgh.

All this and some news about college basketball as well.

Folding

Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool is doubling his criticism of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns players shot Claypool after he said the Browns would be “applauded” by Kansas City this weekend. Even after the Browns “applauded” the Steelers 48-37 on Sunday.

Despite being called by the Cleveland dressing room, Claypool went to DAZN Canada and justified his statements.

“I think if the Browns had won with more class, I wouldn’t have been so salty about it, but they mocking JuJu during the game and after the game, I just didn’t like it,” said Claypool. “They were super classless, against JuJu, against JuJu, what they were saying on the pitch at the end of the game. I will not respect a team that has no respect for us ”.

He is not finished.

“They can enjoy the win and another week of football, but they’ll be on the couch next to me next week, so it’s okay.”

Yes! There’s the kicker. On here. Take a look for yourself.

That interview was posted Wednesday. But Claypool is calling it “old”. Even though it was obviously conducted after his original comments on Monday and the Browns’ subsequent responses. So, how “old” can you be?

And now he wishes Cleveland luck.

I’m not sure what they call it in Canada, Chase. But it looks like you’re trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube, huh?

Banner back?

At least one Steelers pending free agent is entering the open market with optimism about his future in Pittsburgh.

That seems to be the case based on this Steelers tweet addressing Zach Banner.

Banner won the starting right tackle position after a battle on the training ground with Chuks Okorafor. But Banner suffered an ACL injury in Week 1 against the New York Giants. This kept him out of the game for the rest of the season.

Banner also thanked tight end team coach James Daniel.

Daniel, 67, joined Steelers in 2004. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher hired him. Mike Tomlin kept him on the team when he became the head coach in 2007.

Canada to Florida?

Many are wondering whether Steelers’ quarterback coach Matt Canada will replace deposed offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.

If that happens, there may be a bidding war with the Miami Dolphins first. Cameron Wolfe of ESPN reports that Canada is a candidate to become the new offensive coordinator with the Dolphins.

If I’m Canada, I accept the Dolphins’ job if the wages are proportional. The Steelers are a team in decline. Dolphins are a team on the rise. Much of his misdirected and moving schemes will be more transferable to a young defender recently removed from college in Tua Tagovailoa than to an older, established pocket guy like Ben Roethlisberger.

And while Roethlisberger never seemed to have a lot of personal static about Canada – as he did about Todd Haley – he didn’t exactly seem interested in adopting many of Canadian philosophies.

You saw a lot of offensive influence from Canada earlier in the season. But it disappeared quickly.

Staying in Pittsburgh under the current situation would be a foolish mission for Canada. It would be nothing more than a bridge between the retirement of Fichtner and Roethlisberger after the end of 2021.

And if the Steelers fall – which I’m hoping for – Canada could be one and end up in Pittsburgh as a coordinator, perhaps with Tomlin coming out the door in 2021 as well.

Take the Miami job if you can, Matt. Best fit. Better climate. Better future.

In motion

According to Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News, the Atlantic 10 Tournament will not be held in Brooklyn as planned.

Many who follow Duquesne immediately wondered if the location could be moved to Pittsburgh. Maybe at the new UPMC Chuck Cooper Field House if it is completed in time? Maybe the PPG Paints Arena?

Do not hold your breath. Since Pennsylvania generally hates fun events 19 times more than New York, such a change would make little political sense. Even though the virus is better contained and the vaccine is already widespread by then.

In addition, Duquesne may not want to organize a significant event like this in his new building if he has not been able to resolve the facility difficulties for a full basketball season in Dukes first.

However, there is a gap in the PPG Paints Arena, at least with regard to the Penguins’ calendar. Pens are on the road that weekend. They’re in Buffalo. The last home game before the tournament will be on Tuesday, March 9, against the New York Rangers. And the next is not scheduled until Monday, March 15 against Boston Bruins.

But I’m still betting on the UD Arena in Dayton.
