Fireworks on New Year’s Eve trigger bird ‘massacre’ in Rome

Hundreds of dead birds filled the streets of Rome after a flurry of unauthorized fireworks lit the sky on New Year’s Eve – a scene that animal rights activists call “massacre”.

“It may be that they died of fear,” Loredana Diglio, a spokesman for the International Organization for the Protection of Animals, told the Associated Press.

“They can fly together and hit each other, or hit windows or power lines,” said Diglio. “Let’s not forget that they can also die of heart attacks.”

Residents of the Italian capital unleashed massive fireworks, despite the ban on city exhibitions and a 10 pm curfew due to the coronavirus pandemic – but both were ignored by many residents.

Diglio said that fireworks show distress or injure wild and domestic animals every year, and the Italian IOPA branch has imposed a ban on the sale of colored explosives for personal use due to the threat to animals.
