The past week has been filled with news related to Final Fantasy VII Remake. The game is not just getting a new updated version later this year on PlayStation 5, called Intergrade, but the original iteration is also set to be a PlayStation Plus game for March. And while there is still very little we know about the inevitable remake sequence, Square Enix has now provided fans with a very important update on the title’s development team.
In an interview with Famitsu, Square Enix’s longtime director, Tetsuya Nomura, said he would not be in the director’s chair for Final Fantasy VII Remake – Part 2. Instead, Naoki Hamaguchi, who served as co-director last year FFVIIR, will act as the new director going forward. Nomura himself will also help with the project, as he will be creative director for all titles associated with Final Fantasy VII moving forward.
Part of the reason Nomura is making this change is because of the huge amount of work he does at Square Enix. For those who don’t know, Nomura has been one of the main creative forces behind Square’s two biggest franchises, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VII Remake, years ago. In fact, Nomura was already juggling the roles of both franchises when Kingdom Hearts III and FFVIIR were in development at the same time.
Nomura went on to say that he still has an “unprecedented number of projects in progress”, which is why he intends to hand over the reins to Hamaguchi. He also said that with the gameplay of Final Fantasy VII Remake now solved in this first installment, he can simply step back and “see what needs to be improved in the future”.
The only downside about Final Fantasy VII Remake – Part 2 now we have no earthly idea of when it will arrive. The game is clearly in development at Square Enix now, but given how long some of the publisher’s games have taken in the past, it may be a while before we see it publicly.
Still, that’s where Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade The new PS5 version of the game is expected to arrive later this year on June 10, 2021. It will also be exclusive to the next-generation PlayStation console.
How do you feel about Nomura going back a little with the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake – Part 2? Be sure to give me your opinion in the comments or on Twitter at @ MooreMan12.
