Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 developers want to continue to subvert players’ expectations

Final Fantasy 7 Remake co-director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase participated in an interview at CEDEC and talked about their approach to creation Final Fantasy VII Remake – Part 2.

The developers behind the still unnamed Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel gave an interview at The Computer Entertainment Developers Conference, where they recognized the narrative structure of the sequel and suggested that – going forward – there will likely be more deviations from the original game.

During the interview (as translated by the Twitter user Aitaikimochi), Kitase highlighted the importance of subverting players’ expectations in a satisfactory way – and that his goal was to deceive players in a positive way (thanks, Siliconera).

As our own Alex Donaldson observed when the game was released last year, Final Fantasy 7 Remake takes some significant twists and turns at the end of the game, and there are some very big implications as to what that means for the rest of the story. As a result, Donaldson believes that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 should be as bold as possible.

It stands to reason, then, that Kitase will continue to ‘satisfactorily’ subvert players’ expectations with the second part of the Remake saga – whatever it is called.

In terms of taking the story to another installment, Kitase comments on how the development team intends to continue providing the same level of detail that we saw in Midgar to the rest of the Final Fantasy VII world to a degree that “not only surprises, but also beyond [players’] expectations. “

In addition, the team is working to make the battle system even deeper by adding new mechanics and elements. In discussing the new team coming to work in the aftermath, Hamaguchi said:

“One word that comes to mind is ‘battle of action’. They have experimented with a new type of action battle system and also want to contribute to the system. […] They definitely contribute different ideas that, hopefully, will allow us to create new surprises for the battle system too! “
