Final Fantasy 14 receives an open beta version of PS5 on April 13

Final fantasy 14 is finally getting a version of the PlayStation 5, with a beta open from April 13.

Announced by Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda during the Final Fantasy 14 showcase on Friday, the PlayStation 5 version will include a high-resolution interface, faster load times, 4K resolution and increased frame rates. If you suffered while waiting to load into the always-packed Limsa Lominsa, the PS5 version’s increased speed should have alleviated that. (This will not stop people from huddling in Limsa, however.)

On the PlayStation Blog, Square Enix notes that “new and veteran adventurers will be able to play the full experience”. Square Enix confirmed to Polygon that the open beta would be available to all owners Final Fantasy 14 for PlayStation 4.

Any player who bought Final Fantasy 14 for PlayStation 4 will be able to update your copy to a PS5 version for free. Square Enix did the same thing when the game moved from PS3 to PS4. The team has not yet announced whether or when the PS4 version will be dropped, but during the broadcast, producer Naoki Yoshida acknowledged how difficult it is to get a PS5. He encouraged fans to keep trying, during the Live Letter that aired shortly afterwards.

Final Fantasy 14End of Shadowbringers patch, 5.5, will be released on the same day. The next expansion, Endwalker, will be released in the fall of 2021.

Update: We updated the story with clarification from a Square Enix representative on accessibility to the open beta.
