This August will mark two years since the end of the first season of “Euphoria”, but the long wait for the second season will end before 2021 ends if creator and showrunner Sam Levinson gets what he wants. During an interview this week on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast to promote his next Netflix feature film, “Malcolm & Marie”, Levinson confirmed that the plan is to start shooting the 2nd season of “Euphoria” in late March. The creator added: “And the goal is to release episodes this year, so [what will happen]. “Of course, the pandemic may change those plans, but Levinson’s goal is to start shooting in March and start releasing the full episodes on HBO before the end of December.
The production start date in March means that the 2nd season will start shooting exactly one year later than planned. The cameras were about to start shooting in the second season of “Euphoria” in March 2020, when the pandemic forced the entire industry to stop. Levinson and his Emmy-winning actress “Euphoria”, Zendaya, started writing and filming “Malcolm & Marie” while the start date for the second season of “Euphoria” continued to be postponed. To relieve the pain of the long hiatus, the “Euphoria” team filmed two special episodes of bridge (one centered on Rue de Zendaya, the other centered on Hunter Schafer’s Jules), both now broadcast on HBO Max.
Prior to Levinson’s confirmation of the beginning of March, all fans of “Euphoria” knew about the next second season that would begin production in early 2021. HBO programming president Casey Bloys told Deadline after the Emmy Awards, where “Euphoria” surprised many in the industry by winning Zendaya the award for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series. The victory made Zendaya the youngest category winner in Emmy history. “Euphoria” also won the Emmy for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
Levinson and Zendaya’s “Malcolm & Marie” debuts on February 5 on Netflix. The streaming giant is supporting the film with an Oscar campaign, which could win Zendaya a Best Actress nomination. The film also stars “Tenet” and “BlacKkKlansman”, John David Washington. Zendaya and Levinson had the idea for the film, which shows a couple falling apart over the course of a single night while quarantined.
