Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 champion, was injured while cycling in Switzerland

“Fernando is conscious and in good health and awaits new medical exams tomorrow morning,” said the team’s tweet.

The 39-year-old is an avid cyclist who is returning to Formula 1 racing this year. The Spaniard’s return comes less than two years after he announced he was leaving the sport.
Former F1 champion Fernando Alonso escapes from an accident at the Dakar Rally

Pre-season testing for the next F1 season will be held in Bahrain from 12 to 14 March, before the first race in Bahrain on 28 March.

Alonso was involved in an accident in January 2020 during the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, when his Toyota Hilux was launched into the air after hitting a sand dune at an odd angle. The vehicle spun twice before stopping. Neither Alonso nor his co-pilot, Marc Coma, was injured.

A veteran driver, Alonso made 314 starts at the Grand Prix in his F1 career, winning 32 wins and 97 podiums (both wins and podiums put him in sixth place on the all-time list) on three teams – Renault, McLaren and Ferrari – and his return will mark the first time that a driver has had three separate passes with a single F1 team (2003-06, 2008-09 and 2021 onwards).

He was world champion in 2005 and 2006.
