Federal Retail Pharmacy Program capable of vaccinating 18 years or older

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – With several Nebraska pharmacies participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, as of Monday, March 29, these entities will be able to vaccinate residents 18 and older. These sites are all accessible to the public and are still vaccinating individuals in the current priority phase, 2A to include 65 and older, along with essential frontline health workers, EMS, first responders, K-12 teachers, grocery workers , public transport workers, law enforcement, child care workers, food and agriculture workers and correctional officers / officials.

The doses available at pharmacies are in addition to the state’s weekly allocation of first and second doses administered by Nebraska’s 19 local health departments. Some parts of the state are already vaccinating younger ages and may lower the age to ensure that schedules remain busy. The changes to the State-Directed Health Measure (DHM) that will take effect on Monday, March 29 at 12pm consist of the following changes to the requirements of the Federal Retail Pharmacy program:

  • Removing the target age groups and critical infrastructure worker criteria, the Retail Pharmacy Program partners’ criteria will be adjusted to allow them to vaccinate anyone aged 18 or over
  • Remove the requirement for Retail Pharmacy Program partners to coordinate scheduling with their respective local health departments and use the state-designated COVID-19 vaccine registration and scheduling system.

Opening the age group to this program allows Nebraskaans to visit a pharmacy anywhere, regardless of jurisdiction, and speed up vaccination efforts across the state. For example, if a resident in one district wants to schedule a vaccination appointment in another municipality that has availability, he can. Those interested in being vaccinated should check with the neighboring pharmacies for scheduling capabilities, as allocations and availability may vary according to demand.

Walmart, Kohll’s and Hy-Vee are among the pharmacies in Nebraska that currently have public scheduling portals. Individuals can also register on the state website, at Vaccinate.Ne.Gov. The registration of the COVID-19 vaccine allows individuals to receive updates, scheduling information and follow-up reminders about vaccination, as supplies are made available in their area. Pharmacies should coordinate with the local health department to help ensure that doses are properly distributed to currently eligible populations, as supplies are available.

DHHS continues to share COVID-19 and vaccine information through the Coronavirus website, as well as through Facebook and Twitter. The DHHS COVID-19 information line is available to help answer questions about COVID-19 or vaccination. Available by calling (531) 249-1873 or (833) 998-2275, the line operates daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm CT. Relay calls for the deaf and hard of hearing and access to the Language Line are available.
