FDA warns against drinking this bottled water after reports of liver damage

Federal health officials are warning people not to drink alkaline water from the Real Water brand, as the product may be related to liver disease in five children in the Las Vegas area.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) it says has been reported of five cases of acute non-viral hepatitis resulting in acute liver failure in babies and young children that occurred in November 2020 in the southern Nevada health district. Patients from four different families have been hospitalized, but have now recovered.

Health officials say they have all consumed the alkaline watermark, the only common link identified among the five cases so far.

“We are advising consumers, restaurants and retailers not to consume, cook, sell or serve ‘Real Water’ alkaline water until more information on the cause of the illness is known,” Frank Yiannas, FDA deputy commissioner for food policy and response, said in a demonstration.

“We are working to determine how alkaline water can be linked to disease. Although the investigation is ongoing, epidemiological information currently indicates that this alkaline product may be the cause of disease, ”said Yiannas.

Other people in the patient’s homes also reported less severe symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. Non-viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure and death.

The Las Vegas-based bottled water brand said on Wednesday that it was taking proactive steps to stop selling and distributing the product in the United States until the problem is resolved.

“Our goal is to work diligently with the FDA to achieve quick resolution,” said Real Water in a demonstration.

“Real Water is asking all retailers to take the product off the shelf, with immediate effect, and hold it in the back or return it to distributors.”

A family filed a civil lawsuit against the company, claiming that father and son became seriously ill after drinking Água Real. Christopher Wren and his 2-year-old son suffered severe liver damage last year and had to be hospitalized, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal. The child’s mother also became ill, but did not need hospitalization, and a daughter who did not drink the water did not become ill.
