FDA collects Sportmix pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after 28 dogs died

NEW YORK (WABC) – A pet food company is recalling some dry food products instead of a potentially deadly ingredient that has been linked to the deaths of dozens of dogs.

The FDA is warning pet owners and veterinarians about certain Sportmix pet foods, manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.

They can contain lethal levels of aflatoxin – a toxin produced by fungi.

At least 28 dogs died and another eight fell ill with the collected product.
