FCC to provide $ 50 broadband internet subsidies to low-income families

The change comes after the pandemic further exposes technological inequalities.

The FCC voted unanimously on Thursday to establish the $ 3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefits Program, which aims to offer discounts on internet accounts for qualified households. It will also provide some families with the opportunity to receive a discounted computer or tablet.

Acting President Jessica Rosenworcel said the FCC “made history” by creating the rules “for the biggest program ever to help families across the country pay for broadband service”.

“It will help whoever is sitting in a parking lot in a parking lot just get a Wi-Fi signal to go to work online. It will help anyone who stands outside the library with a laptop just to get a wireless signal for learning. It will help anyone who cares about choosing between paying a broadband bill and paying rent or buying groceries, “she added in a statement. “In short, this program can make a significant difference in the lives of people across the country.”

The program offers discounts of up to $ 50 per month for broadband service – and up to $ 75 per month if the family is in tribal lands. In addition, it will establish a one-time discount of up to $ 100 for computers or tablets for eligible homes.

Eligible households include those with children who receive school meals or free breakfast at a reduced price, Pell Grant beneficiaries and those who lost their jobs or had their income reduced last year, according to the FCC. In addition, the program is open to families participating in an existing low-income or pandemic program offered by a broadband provider, as well as current subscribers to the FCC Lifeline support program for accessible communications.

The FCC said it plans to open the program to those who need it in 60 days. More information on how to apply should be made available on the FCC website in the coming weeks.

“I am confident in our team that we will do this carefully, quickly and in the right way,” said Rosenworcel.
