FBI targets a single attacker in the investigation of the death of a Capitol police officer

The FBI said it targets a single attacker as it continues to investigate the death of US Capitol policeman Brian Sicknick, who died of injuries sustained in the January 6 riot.

A federal police source and one close to the investigation confirmed the news on Saturday.

Sicknick, 42, was injured “while physically engaging the protesters” and returned to his division’s office, where he passed out, according to a statement from Capitol Police. He was taken to the hospital, where he died on January 7.

Agents did not identify the exact cause of Sicknick’s injuries, but recently said they suspected it was a potential irritant like spray, like bear spray he inhaled during the riot. The investigation into Sicknick’s death is being treated as an assault.

According to authorities, a video shows a person attacking several policemen, including Sicknick, with spray. The suspect is also heard discussing the alleged attack before the incident, officials said.

Federal authorities have not identified the suspect and the FBI has not yet released the video to the public.

Five people, including Sicknick, died after a crowd of supporters of then President Donald Trump invaded the Capitol to prevent Congress from formally accepting the votes of the Electoral College that handed over the November election to President Joe Biden.
