FBI arrests elected NM official for alleged Capitol riot function

An elected official from New Mexico – who co-founded the Cowboys for Trump group – was arrested by the FBI on Sunday in connection with his alleged role in the Capitol riot.

Couy Griffin, an Otero county commissioner, was arrested after filming on the Capitol stairs the day a crowd of Trump supporters attacked the legislative building, federal officials told KVIA-TV.

At a meeting of commissioners on Thursday, Griffin promised to return to Washington, DC on Induction Day, armed with weapons to “embrace” the Second Amendment, the agency reported separately.

Griffin called the Capitol siege “a great day for America,” according to the report.

“People have shown that it is enough. People are ready for fair and legal elections, or that is what you will have. You’ll get more, ”he said from Capitol on January 6.

Griffin said he did no harm or assaulted anyone on the day of the riot.

New Mexico’s attorney general on Sunday night asked Griffin to resign.

“I am demanding that Couy Griffin resign immediately from the Otero County Commission or my office will request his removal,” Attorney General Hector Balderas, wrote on Twitter.

It was not clear what charges Griffin will face.

His group, Cowboys for Trump, supports the president “and his policies Make America Great Again,” according to his website.
