Loved ones and colleagues gathered on Saturday to honor one of the FBI agents killed by a child pornography suspect in Florida.
Laura Schwartzenberger, 43, was shot in Tuesday’s morning operation when the suspect ambushed law enforcement officials while they were executing a warrant against his home in Sunrise. A second agent, Daniel Alfin, was also killed and three other agents were injured.
The suspect, David Lee Huber, 55, took his own life, police said.
Schwartzenberger, of Pueblo, Colorado, has been with the agency since 2005. She has worked on cases of crimes against children for more than seven years. She leaves a husband and two children.
Hundreds of people attended the memorial service at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which featured several speakers and a body of pipes and drums.
FBI director Christopher Wray called her “a true American hero.”
He said that Schwartzenberger was dedicated to the family. A member of the agency’s diving team, while working in New Mexico, she became the first woman to join the SWAT team in Albuquerque, CBS 12 Miami reported.
Friends remembered the good times, from camping to backyard barbecues, in comments during the emotional service.
“She went through everything at full speed, never slowing down, even when she was crossing the finish line,” said her friend, Brenda Chávez. “Laura, you have blessed the lives of every person you touch. We will never forget you.”
The names of Schwartzenberger and Alfin will be added to the Honor Wall at FBI Headquarters in Washington.
