In an appearance on CNN, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist was directly asked whether the “lack of candor or facts” contributed to the number of lives lost during the coronavirus pandemic last year.
“You know it probably is,” said Fauci. “You know I don’t want this, John, to be a catchphrase, but I think if you just look at it, you’ll be able to see it when you’re starting to walk paths that aren’t based on any science. This does not help at all, especially when you are in a situation of almost being in crisis with the number of cases and hospitalizations and deaths that we have.
“When you start talking about things that don’t make sense medically and scientifically, it clearly doesn’t help,” he continued.

When asked why this was important, Fauci acknowledged that the past year of dealing with the pandemic had been fraught with divisions.
“There is no secret. We had many divisions, we had facts that were very, very clear, which were questioned. People did not trust what the health authorities said, there was a great divide, masks became a political issue.
So, what the president was saying, from the beginning was, let’s restart this. Let everyone enter the same page, trust each other, let science speak. ”
