Dr. Anthony Fauci once again exchanged ideas with a Fox News anchorman on Tuesday, this time resisting Sandra Smith’s claim that “the beams keep moving” when wearing the mask.
During an appearance on Fox News’ America Newsroom on Monday, Fauci – who now serves as chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden – overturned Bill Hemmer’s anchor attempt to give an interview about President Donald Trump, noting that Hemmer’s colleague, Dana Perino, had just said that they should “leave it behind” and move on.
Just a day later, Fauci once again appeared on Fox, this time sitting down for a comprehensive interview with Smith and co-host John Roberts. For the most part, the interview was quite collegial, as the two anchors focused their questions on the Biden government’s coronavirus policies and vaccine distribution plans.
At the end of the conversation, however, he was a little irritated when Smith noticed Fauci’s recent observations that the double mask makes “common sense” and is most likely more effective in protecting against viral spread than wearing a single mask.
“So, if you have a physical cover with one layer, put another layer, it makes sense that it is probably more effective. That’s the reason why you see people wearing double masks or making a version of an N95, ”said Fauci last week.
“Dr. Fauci, it looks like the beacons keep moving, ”said Smith, noting that California is having additional problems as new strains of coronavirus are emerging.
“We are all trying to do whatever it takes to stay safe. We are all wearing our masks and we hope that most people do. Now we are hearing that we should use two, ”she continued before growling:“ If I go to the supermarket, do I wear two, do I wear three? Is it safer to use eight? Where does that stop ?! “
Fauci, for his part, replied that “the discussion is changing, not the goals”, adding that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not officially recommend that anyone wear double masks.
“What they are saying is, ‘Do you know what a good start would be? If everyone wears at least one mask, ”he explained. “I think that would be important. Therefore, the CDC’s recommendations have not changed. What we’re trying to do is make people who don’t wear masks wear masks ”.
