Fauci’s statements come when some states have already begun to lift restrictions on coronavirus amid a nationwide decline in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, as well as an increase in vaccinations. Some states, including Texas, have changed in the past few days to dramatically increase the pace of public life, removing all restrictions on coronavirus, including mask mandates and allowing full-capacity meals.
However, Biden and Fauci warned that lifting restrictions before enough people were vaccinated could reverse progress after the United States overcame what the president called a “dark winter”.
According to the CDC website, more than 90 million people in the United States have received vaccines.
During his first prime-time speech on Thursday night, Biden praised the government’s efforts to increase the distribution of the vaccine, including a call for the country to make all adults eligible for a vaccine by May 1.
The president also alluded to the CDC’s future orientation to vaccinated Americans.
“In the coming weeks, we will issue more guidance on what you can and cannot do once you are fully vaccinated to lessen confusion, keep people safe and encourage more people to be vaccinated,” he said.
Biden said that if people remain vigilant and get vaccinated, Americans will be able to gather in small groups until July 4.
“It doesn’t mean big events with a lot of people together, but it does mean that small groups will be able to get together,” he continued.
