When Microsoft first launched Windows 10, the company made a big fuss about the fact that the operating system was available as a free update for a limited time.
The free upgrade period – supposedly – came to an end some time ago, but it’s actually still possible to jump from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free in 2021. Here’s what you need to know about how to get a free upgrade for Windows 10.

When you consider the fact that Microsoft warned everyone in mid-2015 that it would only be possible to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for a limited time after the release of the operating system, it may be a little surprising that more than five and a half years later , there is still a way for a free update.
To get a free upgrade, you must be running a genuine activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.x. You can then use the following steps to earn a free upgrade to Windows 10:
- Download the Windows Media Creation tool from the Microsoft website.
- Start the tool and select the Update this PC now option.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to update your operating system.
- Before long, you will have Windows 10 installed.
- Check your system’s activation status by opening settings, go to Update and security and then looking at Activation section. You should see that Windows 10 is activated, but if not, click the button Activate button to complete the process.
