Farmers Insurance Open Wolff WDs with hand injury

Matthew Wolff dropped out after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open with a hand injury.

Wolff hit 78 on Torrey Pines’ South Course while playing alongside Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka.

“This week I have been struggling with a right hand injury that I struggled to continue, but unfortunately it has continued to get worse for the past 24 hours,” said Wolff in a statement. “It became clear that I need to make the difficult but certain decision to deal with the pain properly in order to be able to play 100% as quickly as possible. I am disappointed to give up on one of my favorite tournaments of the year, but I want to thank PGA TOUR, the Farmers Insurance team and the incredible volunteers for their hospitality. “

Wolff made 14 pairs on Thursday at Campo Sul, but also suffered two triple bogeyes, on the seventh and 10th holes. He started his day with a bogey on the first hole before making a bunker shot on the 18th for his only birdie of the day.

Wolff is 16th in this season’s FedExCup, after finishing second in the US Open and Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
