Family blames haircut on couple’s death from coronavirus

A family in Chicago says a haircut led to the death of their parents from the coronavirus, after the disease hit several family members within days.

Joe Bruno, son of Mike and Carol Bruno, said his sister, who works at a hairdresser, had tested negative for the virus just before Thanksgiving Day and then was quarantined for several days before going to her apartment with mom Carol to give her a haircut, reported WECT.com.

“I didn’t hug my mom,” Joe Bruno told the news agency. “I didn’t hug my sister. My sister cut my hair. She was masked and all the windows were open. We were apart in my apartment, and then they left. They went on for about 40 to 45 minutes. Later that night, my sister started feeling the symptoms. About three days later, I started feeling the symptoms. “

Eventually, his mother developed symptoms, as did his father. The couple, who had been married for 59 years, struggled for several weeks before they died ten days apart. Carol Bruno, 79, died first on December 14, according to her obituary.

In addition to Joe and his sister, Carol and Mike leave another child.

“Carol was a strong woman who overcame many challenges throughout her life,” said the obituary published on the website Elms Funeral Home. “She loved to cook, she was a dedicated wife, an incredible mother and a gracious woman. Carol has spread joy to everyone around her and will be sorely missed.”

Joe Bruno said he hopes his family’s situation will serve as a lesson to others about the dangers of the virus and the importance of following public health measures.
