FLOWERY BRANCH, Georgia – The Atlanta Falcons have appointed Kyle Smith as vice president of player personnel, the team announced on Friday.
Smith joins the Falcons after 11 seasons with the Washington Football Team. He spent most of his career in Washington as a college scout, but was promoted to vice president of gambling personnel in January last year. In 2020, Smith oversaw the faculty and professional aspects of the front office.
“Kyle has literally grown up in this business and is obsessed and passionate about the process of building and managing competitive teams.” Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said. “He is extremely smart, detailed and organized and couldn’t be more excited to become an Atlanta Falcon.
“We are thrilled that he is joining our team. I also wanted to acknowledge and thank our current team, which has shown flexibility and adaptability as we continue to make this transition within our organization. They continued to focus on our goals as a team and we looking forward to growing together. “
Prior to his promotion, Smith spent three years as staff director for the team’s faculty. In this role, he led the assessment of the collegiate talent organization and managed Scouting efforts at the area and national level. After spending a year as an intern in 2010, he joined the team full time in 2011. Smith spent six seasons as an organization scout, most recently managing the team’s scout efforts in the Southeast.
Smith graduated from Youngstown State, where he was twice honored at all conferences while playing wide receiver and punt returner in 2002-05. He signed as a free college agent with the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent part of the 2006 off-season. In January 2007, he signed with Tampa Bay, who allocated him to the NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder. Subsequently, he had team spells in the Arena Football League and Canadian Football League.
Smith was born in Warwick, RI, and raised in Buffalo, NY. He is the son of former NFL executive AJ Smith.
