Facts check: Trump’s lawyer blows up one of Trump’s biggest lies

But now your lawyer has done so. In the plenary of the US Senate.

Bruce Castor Jr.’s performance at the start of Trump’s second impeachment trial is likely to be remembered more for his pointless ramblings than anything else. But Castor’s monologue on Tuesday was also notable for something he said when trying to get to a rare point.
Castor argued that the real reason Trump was impeached again is that his opponents in most Democrats in the House do not want him to run for the 2024 elections. (If two-thirds of the senators present voted to condemn Trump, a simple majority of senators could then decide to ban Trump from holding a future position.) Castor said the decision on who will be the next president should be left to the American people.
And Castor said, “People are smart enough … to choose a new government if they don’t like the old one. And they just did.” Soon after, Castor added that this is commonplace: “People get tired of a government they don’t want. And they know how to change it. And they just changed it.”

Castor’s statement about what people “just did” is obvious to anyone who is willing to acknowledge reality. Except that Trump tried very hard to create an alternative reality.

Horrible crowd scenes dominate Trump's impeachment trial
Although Joe Biden defeated Trump at the Electoral College and won more than seven million more votes, fair and honest, Trump repeatedly declared that the people really re-elected him in a “landslide” and that fraud and theft tricked him into his legitimate victory. (He repeated this absurdity even in the video he tweeted during the Capitol insurrection.)
Although Trump finally admitted, in his last days in office, that a new administration would be taking over, he never admitted that voters really chose someone else over him – let alone that voters did it because they didn’t “want” or “how” to Trump administration.
The pre-trial statements by Trump’s lawyers were filled with false allegations and Trump-style distortions. But Castor just meandered his way to truly blow up one of his client’s favorite lies.
