GREENVILLE – Andrew Eyster doubled home with Brady Allen at the end of the 11th inning, while South Carolina beat Clemson 3-2 in college baseball on Saturday at Fluor Field in Greenville.
Allen led the 11th with a double in the center-right field against Geoffrey Gilbert, the fourth Tiger pitcher. Allen went into a double-out for Eyster.
Gamecocks improved to 5-0 this season, while Clemson dropped to 3-1. The teams meet again on Sunday at 1:30 pm at Founders Park in Columbia.
The Gamecocks put a race in the first in Wes Clarke’s RBI to the middle that marked Allen. The two teams switched races on Wednesday. James Parker of Clemson brought Dylan Brewer with a single in the middle, while Jeff Heinrich’s RBI single to center scored Brennan Milone, who doubled up to start the frame. This gave the USC a 2-1 advantage.
The game stayed that way until the start of the ninth day, when Parker led the board with a solo home run on the Green Monster to the left of Carolina reliever Brett Kerry.
Carolina got out of trouble on the 11th, when Will Sanders came to relieve Kerry with the runners in first and second with no one outside. Sanders induced a double 6-4-3 game and then landed to finish Clemson in 11th.
Sanders won with relief. Holder Thomas Farr hit seven in a season of 6 innings. Julian Bosnic had three eliminations in one entry, while Kerry eliminated six in three entries.
Allen, David Mendham and Heinrich had three hits each, while Eyster had two hits. The USC had 15 strokes, but resisted 21 times and left 13 runners at the base.
Parker finished with three strokes to lead Clemson, who had just seven strokes. Brewer had two hits. USC pitchers hit 16 hitters.
Clemson’s starting pitcher, Davis Sharpe, worked only four innings and allowed seven hits, but he eliminated 10. Mack Anglin eliminated three in three innings, while Rasesh Pandya hit two in one. Gilbert eliminated six in 2 1/3 innings.
