Extending Michigan’s school year? That could happen, say teachers’ representatives

LANSING, Mich. – The battle to provide education for all during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to become increasingly complicated.

State superintendent Dr. Michael Rice asked the state legislature to extend the school year on Tuesday so that students make up for lost time.

The idea comes with several challenges, including the adhesion of teachers.

“This school year alone cannot last even five minutes longer,” said Paula Herbart, president of the Michigan Education Association. “We need a break. Educators need a break. Students need a break. “

It is undeniable that the academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21 sold out teachers.

It is necessary to climb a gigantic hill to find a way to make students return with 181 days of face-to-face education and update them so that they can advance in essential skills.

Yes, teachers want to go back to the classroom, but that does not mean that they have no major concerns.

“I would be remiss if I said that many of my union members are happy to be back,” said Michael Mickens, a Pontiac professor and union president.

To extend anything, the terms need to be negotiated.

Detroit public school district superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said he cannot realistically extend the school year, but can expand learning opportunities in all neighborhoods.

Herbart said it could be done, but they would need to talk about contracts, days of remediation and compensation.

“Educators across the board, support staff, they are spread out as far as they can,” said Herbart.
