Expected heavy snowfall, second winter storm later this week

DETROIT – Snow will invade Metro Detroit on Monday night, leaving almost all of us over half a foot. A second storm is on its way to the end of this week as well.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for all of southeastern Michigan, from 6pm Monday to noon on Tuesday.

There will not be many nuances or complicated forecasting problems with this one. It will only be brute force snow and, for such a prolific snow maker, the quantities do not vary so much in the area.

Expect the lowest totals to be around 5 inches in Livingston and Genesee counties, with the highest totals of up to 8 inches on the east side, which will be closer to the snow core. Check the 4ZONE page for detailed numbers.

The general snowfall will decrease around 7 am on Tuesday in all but the northeastern corner of our North Zone. There will be some lake-effect snowfall in our North Zone in the morning, but areas south of M-59 are unlikely to see any of this.

There is already a double storm right behind us on President’s Day. We won’t be shedding that much snow, because the track will be a little further east. Therefore, it is not an identical twin, just a fraternal twin.

This storm begins on Thursday afternoon and continues until midday on Friday. The accumulations appear to be in the 2–4 inch range.

The coldest air in two years has not yet arrived. It will be here from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning. Our forecast for the metropolitan area is 2 degrees, with some areas falling below zero.

If you’re tired of the cold and want some relief, check the 10-day forecast which gets us close to 40 degrees at the beginning of next week!
