Ewers, teammates lose a victory, lose in the state championship game

Ohio State Quarterback Commitment in 2022 Quinn Ewers and his teammates Southlake (Texas) Southlake Carroll lost a victory before their goal in the 2020-21 season, losing to Austin (Texas) Westlake in the Texas state championship game 6A 52-34 on Saturday night. It was the second consecutive state championship for Westlake.

The night started off spectacularly with Ewers hitting 4 out of 5 to 58 yards and then 3 out of 3 on his next shot, including a 49 yard touchdown pass, with Southlake Carroll having a 14-7 lead. Ewers had thrown 130 yards at that point.

However, each time Southlake Carroll scored, Westlake also scored. Westlake then took the lead 21-14 at the start of the second quarter. Ewers and his teammates returned to tie the game at 21, before Westlake scored with 1:12 at the end of the break and took a 28-21 lead to the locker room at the break.

Westlake, who scored in all four possession in the first half, drove 75 yards to open the second half and scored in a 4-yard run to make 35-21. Ewers was hit while shooting and was intercepted a second time. Westlake followed up with another touchdown to take a 42-21 lead.

Finally, in the third quarter, Southlake Carroll kept Westlake out of the final zone with ball possession, forcing a field goal try that was good for a 45-21 lead to Westlake. Westlake added another touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 52-21 lead, before Ewers hit a 10-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 52-27 with 4:21 to end the game.

After recovering a side kick, Southlake Carroll scored again, this time in a short run to make Westlake’s score 52-34 with 3:14 towards the end of the game. But that ended the night’s scoring and Westlake came home with a 52-34 victory and another 6A state championship.

Ewers completed 23 of 39 passes for 352 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Westlake was led by his talented 2022 quarterback class Cade Klubnik who completed 18 of 20 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown while also running for 97 yards and two points. Klubnik has more than two dozen scholarship offers, including Texas, Auburn, TCU, North Carolina, LSU and Georgia.
