Eugene Goodman: New security video reveals more heroism during the Capitol riot

The security video, which the House’s impeachment managers first aired on Wednesday, shows Goodman running as the crowd begins to enter the Capitol. Goodman passes through Romney and redirects him from the rioters’ path before continuing to the first floor to respond to the violation and divert the crowd of lawmakers.

Utah’s Romney is a frequent target of criticism from Trump supporters. He was the only Republican to vote to condemn Trump during his first impeachment trial last year and has frequently criticized him throughout his time in politics, both before and after his presidency.

The video of Goodman’s efforts was played along with new security footage from the Capitol, showing how protesters violently violated the complex and the threat they posed to everyone in the building, while managers argued that Trump was responsible for inciting the episode.

Democrat Del. Stacey Plaskett of the Virgin Islands, one of nine impeachment managers, walked with senators through security footage, showing where the protesters had breached the Capitol and how close they were to then Vice President Mike Pence, to whom they were targeting.

“They were coming at Donald Trump’s insistence to prevent Congress, a separate branch of the government, from certifying the results of a presidential election,” said Plaskett.

Goodman, now the Senate’s deputy arms sergeant, had already been hailed as a hero after an earlier video emerged of him guiding the violent crowd out of the Senate chamber, where Pence was conducting the ceremonial count of the 2020 electoral votes.

Images of the uprising captured by Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic shows Goodman being chased down the Capitol stairs by a crowd of rebels shortly after they invaded. When he reached a landing, he looked to the left, where he noticed the door to the Senate chamber was still unprotected. He then led the protesters to the right, away from lawmakers and toward support officers.

Senate chambers would not be safe until a minute later, according to CNN’s timeline of riot events.

Some lawmakers introduced legislation to recognize Goodman with a Congressional gold medal for potentially saving lives. The medal is reserved for Americans who have made “remarkable achievements and contributions” to their country.

Goodman also accompanied Vice President Kamala Harris to the opening ceremony last month.
