Hawke once said that superhero movies have been praised in excess, which means “Moon Knight” must be very good.
Ethan Hawke is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain of the television series “Moon Knight” at Disney +, reports THR. The casting will make “Moon Knight” hard to resist for independent film lovers, as the MCU series pits Hawke against Oscar Isaac, who is starring in the title role. The escape from “Ramy”, May Calamawy, will also star in “Moon Knight”, which is being directed by Mohamed Diab and the filmmakers “The Endless” and “Synchronic” Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Hawke’s specific character remains a secret, but he is set to play the main villain of the series.
The fact that Hawke is joining Marvel’s cinematic universe may raise some eyebrows, given his valuable comments from August 2018, in which he shared his belief that superhero films are highly praised by critics. In an interview with The Film Stage to mark his award for all of his work at the Locarno Film Festival, Hawke showed ambivalence about the superhero genre and cited Oscar nominee “Logan” as an exaggerated example.
“Now we have the problem that they tell us that ‘Logan’ is a great movie,” said Hawke at the time. “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people with metal tights coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it as it is. “
Hawke continued, “I went to see ‘Logan’ because everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a great superhero movie. ‘There is a difference, but big companies don’t think there is a difference. Big companies want you to think this is a great movie because they want to make money from it. “
In a follow-up interview with Collider, Hawke said he was making “a subtle observation about money in America and what our obsession with accumulating wealth is”. The actor added: “Scott Derrickson’s ‘Doctor Strange’ is incredible, Chris Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’, James Mangold’s ‘Logan’, I quoted them because they are my favorites, and people took them [it as] me criticizing them. What I was trying to say [is] we need a community that makes all kinds of films. “
Hawke is receiving rave reviews for his limited Showtime series “The Good Lord Bird” and at the end of last year he completed production on “The Northman”, director Robert’s new Viking epic of “The Witch” and “The Witch” Lighthouse “Eggers. Hawke plays an Icelandic king in the film alongside Nicole Kidman as his queen. Hawke’s most recent film, “Tesla”, was released last summer. According to THR, “Moon Knight” is planning to start production in March in Budapest.
