The Vikings are a team that has a big contract as a quarterback. This did not stop some from speculating that Kirk Cousins is moving in this off-season, although it should be noted that rumors of a Cousin exchange have been dispelled.
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin was tasked with making a bold prediction for the Vikings. Your choice? That the Vikings will be part of the quarterback carousel at the free agency. Here’s what she wrote:
“If Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers really want Kirk Cousins, now is the time for Minnesota to make an exchange that will create freedom to rebuild other parts of the squad. The Vikings could get rid of the financial commitment they made to Cousins when he signed a two-year extension last March, with a cap of $ 31 million for 2021 and taking a different direction in the position. If that comes in the form of Jimmy Garoppolo and a second round choice (they currently don’t have one), Vikings should take the opportunity. “
I want to start by saying that I think Cousins is one of the best defenders in the NFL. Furthermore, the team’s regression in 2020 was not his fault. That said, I think if the Vikings could leave Cousins in the long run, the future of the franchise would be better. Cousins is good, but he is not among the elite defenders of the league. I used to think he could, theoretically, be good enough for Minnesota to get into a deep playoff race and win a Super Bowl. But now, I’m not so sure. It would be up to the team to continue looking for a quarterback, no matter how long it takes.
