Erik Kimrey to join Gamecocks’ technical team

Former player Erik Kimrey hopes to join the South Carolina football team.

Erik Kimrey is expected to be the next coach to join the team in Columbia, according to a 247 Sports report. The former Gamecock footballer was the head coach of Hammond High School, in the interior of the country, for the past 17 years, where he built an unstoppable program and led his teams to 12 state titles.

On Wednesday, Kimrey announced his resignation from Hammond, a move signaling his acceptance of the position on Shane Beamer’s new team. He must be a rigid technician in his new role.

Due to the fact that Gamecocks have first-year players in the squad who played for Hammond, Kimrey has to work in a field capacity. In last year’s class, South Carolina got the commitments from defense line attackers Jordan Burch and Alex Huntley, who played for the Skyhawks.

Kimrey played for Gamecocks under coach Lou Holtz between 2000 and 2002. His most memorable moment in college football came in a 2000 game between South Carolina and the state of Mississippi.

Both teams entered the game undefeated, with Gamecocks already having a ninth-place turnaround over Georgia. It was the season after a streak of 21 games lost, and the team was trying to get their second win over an opponent ranked in four games.

In a race at the end of the fourth quarter, with the Gamecocks losing 19-13, quarterback Phil Petty was injured in a third down play with the team trying to take the lead. Kimrey was inserted into the lineup, telling coach Holtz that he can launch the fade route.

Kimrey made the fourth down snap and launched a looping pass to receiver Jermale Kelly. Kelly was able to go under the pass and mark the reception of the game’s victory touchdown.

Kimrey becomes Shane Beamer’s first contract. Offensive coach Will Friend is also expected to join the team.
