Epic Games buys shopping center to become new headquarters • Eurogamer.net

When most people go to stores, they buy some things. When Epic Games goes shopping, she buys her local mall.

This week, Epic agreed to purchase the Cary Towne Center, a 980,000-square-foot lot near its current home in Cary, North Carolina.

The vast complex will become Epic’s new campus, which will open in 2024 after a three-year plan to renovate and rebuild the area. I expect some statues of Fortnite’s favorite Fishstick.

Although Epic owns the site, part of it can still be assigned for use by the local community, the company said.

Epic moved to Cary in 1999 after it was initially founded as Potomac Computer Systems at Tim Sweeney’s parents’ home in Potomac, Maryland. The company now says it has 50 offices worldwide, which run the highly successful Fortnite, develop the Unreal Engine and operate the Epic Games Store.

If you want to take a look at what the nearly empty Cary Towne Center looks like today, there are lots of strangely interesting photos on reddit r / deadmalls.
