Epic Games announces new acquisition of RAD Game Tools

Epic Games acquired the technology and business from RAD Game Tools, according to a post on the official Epic Games website. RAD Game Tools is a video game software development company. According to the post, its “products and technology appear in about 25,000 games and are leveraged by the world’s leading game companies, including Epic”.

Epic Games owns the Epic Games Store and Unreal Engine, a powerful and popular game development tool. The statement further says: “Epic and RAD plan to integrate RAD’s powerful technology into Unreal Engine to benefit the community of developers and gamers.”

Epic Games has used RAD technology before, specifically compression technology. This allowed the developer to improve the loading time of Fifteen days, which is currently one of the most popular games in the world. The post further explains that as games become more “photorealistic and powerful, developers need the best compression software in their class, which can manage increasing data requirements without compromising on quality”.

In short, the plan is for the RAD team and technology to work with the Unreal Engine rendering, animation, insights and audio teams to improve the systems and infrastructure that game developers use. Although Epic now owns RAD, RAD will continue its existing work with the games, television and film partners, including those who do not use Unreal Engine in their work.

This is not the only big move that Epic Games has made recently. Fifteen daysThe company’s developer and publisher recently purchased a mall with nearly a million square feet of space to serve as the company’s global headquarters.
