End of Wonder Woman 1984 explained

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently playing in Indian cinemas. Patty Jenkins’ direction brings Gal Gadot back to the role of the Amazon superhero. Set in the 1980s, the film DC pits Gal Gadot’s Diana against Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord.

The film received mostly positive reviews, although critics said it is nowhere near as good as the original 2017 film.

What happens at the end of Wonder Woman 1984? (SPOILERS AHEAD)

In the 1980s, Diana is working as a senior anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institute, where she meets Barbara Ann Minerva (Wiig), an insecure woman who wants to be as powerful, confident and stylish as Diana.

Pascal’s Maxwell is a businessman who wants Dreamstone, the MacGuffin of the film that initiates the film’s primary conflict. It is Dreamstone that brings Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) back to Diana’s life and turns Minerva into Cheetah. It grants wishes, but it also recovers something vital. When Diana brings Steve back, her powers begin to disappear. Minerva may have become powerful, but now she is a being of pure anger.

Maxwell eventually acquires Dreamstone and begins to fulfill his wishes. He also becomes an influential entrepreneur, but begins to grow old and die. He counters this by sucking other people’s life force. Barbara and Maxwell unite, as she loves her new powers too much and doesn’t want Diana to hurt Maxwell.

Diana wears the Golden Eagle armor of the legendary Amazon warrior Asteria (more on that later) and defeats Cheetah. Then Diana confronts Maxwell, who is using a new transmission system to fulfill wishes for the entire world. It accidentally gives the United States even more nuclear weapons and threatens a nuclear holocaust (perhaps the only relevance of the Cold War scenario). Diana uses the Lasso of Truth to convince everyone in the world to renounce her wishes, undoing the damage Maxwell has done. Barbara also loses her powers.

1984 Wonder Woman scene

An intermediary credit scene after the film shows a mysterious woman rescuing people from being crushed under a pole. She looks like Wonder Woman. But she is actually Asteria, the legendary Amazon warrior, who originally wore the Golden Eagle armor that Diana wears in the final act of the film.

In addition, the actor who appears as Asteria is actually Lynda Carter, who rehearsed the role of Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV series.

Wonder Woman 1984 was released in India on December 24th.
