WandaVision episode 5 spoilers to follow.
In one of WandaVision In most heartbreaking moments, Wanda tells her twin sons that, “We cannot reverse death, no matter how sad it makes us.” That’s not good news for all the Sparky stans out there, whether you’re a fan of cute dogs or Tom King’s ‘Vision’ comics that inspired this little creature.
However, what Wanda says is not entirely true. Of course, the mechanics of Vision’s resurrection have not yet been determined, but we know that Maximoff is somehow responsible for his return, reviving his robot corpse like a scary puppeteer.
And then, of course, there are This one Final. We suspect for a time that Pietro would come back to life at the MCU, because if Wanda’s husband can return, why not his dead brother too?
What we didn’t necessarily expect – internet leaks aside – was that this version of Pietro would not be the one that Wanda fought alongside the Avengers. Indeed, this Quicksilver hasn’t even appeared on the MCU until now, something that was only possible very recently thanks to the Disney / Fox merger.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First of all, who is this “long lost brother” and why does he look like Evan Peters? Wanda certainly looked confused, and many viewers probably also shared that feeling.
As Marvel fans may remember, Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the speedster’s time on the screen passed too quickly because Ultron killed him before the credits rolled.
Pietro who appears here in WandaVision instantly claims to be Wanda’s brother, and he seems to recognize her too, so why wasn’t Aaron Taylor-Johnson reworked on paper? A year before Marvel brought the silver-haired speedster to life on screen, Fox’s X-Men presented their own version played by American Horror Story’s Evan Peters.
For years, the MCU and the Fox X-Men universe have been unable to cross paths for boring legal reasons, keeping the characters that regularly hang out in the comics separate.
Things were kept separate on the screen because of that, but Quicksilver was an unusual case, because in the source material, he is a mutant and an Avenger. As it complicated things, these blurry lines allowed Marvel and Fox to create their own exclusive versions of the same character.
However, all of that changed a few years ago when Disney and Fox merged, allowing Marvel to finally integrate long-lost characters like the X-Men into their world. Fans have been speculating about this for some time, but finally, WandaVision now confirmed that the mutants are officially part of the MCU. Or not?
More on that later, but for now. the question remains: why would Wanda resurrect a different version of his brother? Did she just “reshape it”, as Darcy suggests? Aaron Taylor-Johnson was busy that day?
At the moment, there are two prevalent theories, both more fascinating than Wanda herself. The first possibility is that this is not really Pietro and Marvel are just messing with us by choosing someone who has already played this character for a different studio. And if that is the case, we do not imagine that the intentions of this “Pietro” are good.
WandaVision The last episode does a lot of heavy lifting to suggest that Wanda is the MCU’s new Big Bad, and yes, the way she manipulates innocent people is inexcusable, but it still looks like someone else is manipulating her in the same way. After all, Agnes clearly knows more than she is saying, and although Vision thinks Wanda is totally in control, even she was surprised by Pietro’s arrival.
This suggests that Evan Peters is playing someone outside of all that is not under Wanda’s spell. When she brought Sight back to life, this was an intentional move on her part, but that is not the case here, and wouldn’t she need to focus on bringing Pietro back? Sure, he could just be another manifestation of his subconscious, but if that were true, wouldn’t he look like Aaron Taylor-Johnson?
For some time, fans have suspected that someone else is pulling strings here, and an obvious choice of comics is Mephisto, Marvel’s version of Satan. This demonic entity has manipulated Wanda comics before in an attempt to control his power, and his children’s story is inextricably linked to his. Then there is also Master Pandemonium, a former Hollywood star who now fulfills Mephisto’s orders using demons as members. Yes really.
Both characters caused Wanda incalculable suffering in the comics, destroying his hopes for a happy ending to call his own, so it is entirely possible that Evan Peters is actually playing one of these villains in disguise. And the arrival of the real devil in the MCU would be a huge game changer, right?
But then, this still does not explain why Evan Peters appears instead of Aaron. If this is not just a stunt cast, it seems that the most likely explanation for all this is that he is actually playing Pietro, but the one we know on X-Men movies.
DC Flash can use its super speed to run between alternate realities, but Quicksilver is not known for using his powers that way, whether you’re talking about Pietro from Marvel, Pietro from Fox or even from the Pietro comics. With that in mind, what seems most likely is that Wanda actually pulled this version of his brother directly from the X-Men universe to the MCU.
This episode strives to confirm that Wanda can rewrite reality, so it is possible that she may have unconsciously dragged a different version of Pietro to Westview. Wanda can only bring Sight back to life because he is synthetic and they both share a connection with the Mental Stone. Resurrecting a real human may exist outside the realms of Wanda’s power set, so instead of bringing her Pietro back to life, she may have (unconsciously) searched the multiverse for a different Pietro who survived.
Multiverse’s antics have been in the cards for some time. Not only do we know for sure that Deapool 3 will bring Ryan Reynolds to the MCU, but it has also been confirmed that previous Spider-Men from the Sony universe will meet Tom Holland’s Spider as well. And it is no coincidence that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive before that …
Knowing that Wanda was confirmed to appear in that film as well, it stands to reason that all of Wanda’s meddling with reality could disrupt the structure of reality in general, forcing Doctor Strange to intervene and help fix the multiverse before it’s too late.
With several Spider-Men and one confirmed The fantastic four film coming towards us, the X-Men will definitely start rubbing shoulders with the Avengers sooner or later, and it looks like WandaVision is the key to unlocking all of that.
If this is true, it is too early to say whether Evan Peters will remain for a long time as a “new” Pietro. And honestly, we are a little concerned about Vision’s future beyond this show as well. After Sparky’s death, Billy and Tommy tell their mother that “Family is forever”, but we’re not sure that Wanda will have the happy ending she deserves …
