End of barricade situation in Royal Oak, 34-year-old suspect shot by police

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The situation of a sniper barricaded in Royal Oak ended on Saturday night, when the suspected sniper was shot by the police and rushed to a hospital.

According to authorities, the police responded to a report of a domestic dispute between a father and his adult son in a house on block 2700 on Oliver Road at around 2 pm. Police said the 34-year-old son was intoxicated and assaulted his father. who called 911.

Neighbors said the man was ex-military and reportedly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder when he assaulted his father.

Police added that he was heavily armed, wearing armor and barricaded himself inside the Royal Oak residence.

The police said they made telephone contact with the son and made several attempts to convince him to surrender peacefully. Police said they heard shots coming from inside the house and that the suspect had threatened to shoot the police.

The police set up a perimeter and urged the area – on Galpin and Glenview avenues and on Oliver and Glenwood roads – to shelter on the spot, stay away from windows and protect themselves in basements, if possible.

Police said that around 4 pm, the Oakland County SWAT team arrived, took control of the situation and continued to negotiate with the man inside.

After about two and a half hours without contact, the police said they used a SWAT robot and drone to break down the door and search the house.

Authorities said communication was re-established with the suspected sniper after the drone was disabled.

“There was a lady outside with the police department who was talking to Jason. She was saying, ‘Jason, come out with your hands up,’ ”said neighbor Ted Boiteau.

“It looked like that,” said Carol Boiteau.

“She was trying to dissuade him,” said Ted Boiteau. “This went on for quite a while and, as she spoke, we heard a shot.”

“And then everything was quiet,” said Carol Boiteau.

The shot came from the police at 8:28 pm

According to the authorities, the alleged sniper left the house at around 8:30 pm, aimed a rifle at police officers and a member of the SWAT team shot him.

The police said the deputies and the Royal Oak Fire Department helped the man and he was rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

At 10 pm, the suspected sniper was still alive in the hospital. Your parents are expected to be fine.
