Grimes and Musk revealed in May 2018 that they were dating. They made their first appearance as a couple at the 2018 Met Gala.

Musk confirmed in May 2020 in a tweet that he and Grimes were expecting their first child together.

On May 4, Musk logged on to Twitter to share that Grimes gave birth to a boy. “Mom and baby are fine,” he wrote.

Originally, their baby’s name was X Æ A-12, but Grimes said in an Instagram comment in May that she and Musk changed their name to X AE A-XII, as Libby Torres of Insider reported.

“Roman numerals. It looks better too,” wrote the singer in a comment on Instagram.

As Avery Hartmans of Business Insider reported in May, the California birth registration manual states that the names of babies in the state can only include the 26 English alphabetical characters, with the exception of some punctuation in names like “O’Hare” and “Smith-Jones.”

The singer added in a comment on Instagram that only “a dash is allowed”, referring to the hyphen in her son’s name. The character Æ, which was originally in the son’s name, however, is not allowed.

Musk cleared up the confusion about how to say his son’s name in an episode of the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. He said the name is pronounced “X Ash Archangel”.

However, the couple’s name for their son spawned countless memes.
