After an appearance at the Clubhouse audio reception service, where he briefly discussed some Neuralink projects involving playing monkeys, Elon Musk said that the brain-computer interface startup is trying to accelerate its pace to allow testing on humans as quickly as possible. As long as things go well, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX noted that human testing of Neuralink technology could begin as early as this year.
Musk’s update came in response to a tweet from a Twitter user Hamoon Kamai, who claimed to be available for clinical studies at Neuralink. Kamai noted that he was in a car accident 20 years ago, which has resulted in shoulder paralysis since then. In his response, Musk said that initializing the brain-computer interface is prioritizing security and is in close communication with the FDA.
“Neuralink is working hard to ensure the safety of the implant and is in close communication with the FDA. If things go well, we may be able to do initial tests on humans later this year, ”wrote Musk.
Elon Musk mentioned Neuralink several times on his recent Twitter tours. Recently, the CEO posted about job openings at the company, noting that Neuralink’s goals are “important at the species level” in the future. Musk later added that those interested in working for Neuralink, especially those with skills and experience in advanced wearables, phones or robots, can work in the company’s bay area or in Austin.
Neuralink’s brain implant device has undergone some improvements over the years. During his presentation in August 2020, Elon Musk revealed the design of the Link V0.9, which is noticeably more elegant than the device the company presented during its presentation in the summer of 2019. The company’s implant robot, which would take care of the installation of the Neuralink device, also showed some improvements over the previous iteration.
While Neuralink’s long-term goal may be to achieve a certain degree of symbiosis with artificial intelligence, the company’s short-term goals are much more substantiated. Musk, for example, noted that Neuralink’s technology can help cure neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia and spinal cord injuries, allowing those who suffer from these conditions to have a second chance to live a full life.
