Neuralink, Elon Musk’s implantable brain-machine interface company, allegedly allowed a monkey to play video games with his mind, according to claims by the Tesla CEO.
Bloomberg reports that Musk gave an interview in Good Time Show at the Clubhouse on Sunday, revealing that the company had already made some promising progress. “We have a monkey with a wireless implant in the skull with small wires that can play video games with the mind,” he said. “You can’t see where the implant is and he’s a happy monkey. Last year, Neuralink introduced the technology successfully used in Gertrude, the sow. Musk compared the implant, which is the size of a coin, to “a Fitbit in his skull, with tiny threads”. He joked at the time that he could have one of those implants on his head and no one would know. One of the goals of the technology is to combat common brain diseases, including memory loss, blindness, paralysis, depression, hearing loss, anxiety and brain damage, among others.
Musk launched Neuralink in 2017 and the company has continued to make progress since then. The general idea is to help people interact more easily with computer interfaces, including cell phones. It is unclear when the technology will be tested on humans or when it may be released to the public or medical professionals.
