Elon Musk is looking to expand his presence in the Lone Star State.

The business tycoon shared the news via Twitter on Tuesday, revealing his plans to create his own city in Texas, called “Spacebase”.

Although Musk kept details to a minimum, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño confirmed that he was aware of the SpaceX CEO’s desire to incorporate Boca Chica Village, the small Texas town where SpaceX is building its space rocket deep. Treviño suggested that county commissioners are open to the idea, but said that Musk and his aerospace company should go through a formal process that may include petitions.

“If SpaceX and Elon Musk want to follow this path, they must comply with all state incorporation statutes,” said Treviño in a statement. “Cameron County will process all appropriate petitions in accordance with applicable law.

The village of Boca Chica currently has a population of about two dozen people, which means that it is far from being designated as a “city”; however, Musk told a Twitter user that Spacebase will go beyond Boca Chica, indicating its intentions to incorporate at least one other city.

In late 2020, Musk confirmed that he had moved from California to Texas, and transferred his private Golden State Musk Foundation to Austin. The change came after the billionaire expressed frustration with California regulators and their high taxes; but he assured the public that SpaceX would still have a presence within the state.

“First, Tesla and SpaceX obviously have massive operations in California. In fact, it is important to note that Tesla is the last car company still making cars in California, ”he said in December. “SpaceX is the last aerospace company still doing significant production in California. Then. There used to be more than a dozen car factories in California. And California used to be the center of aerospace manufacturing! My companies are the last two left … This is a very important point to highlight … As for me, yes, I moved to Texas. “

Stay tuned as more information about “Space Base” becomes available.
