Elon Musk may start implanting computer chips in human brains this year

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said his brain-computer interface startup Neuralink could start testing on humans as early as this year “if things go well”

The San Francisco Bay Area-based start-up and co-founded by Musk in 2016 aims to implant a computer interface in the human brain to help treat neurological diseases like Alzhemier, dementia and spinal cord injuries. In the long run, the company seeks to achieve a certain degree of symbiosis between humans and artificial intelligence.

In Twitter On Monday, Musk responded to another user’s request to participate in human trials of the technology.

“I had a car accident 20 years ago and since then I have been paralyzed. I am always available for clinical studies at @Neuralink, ”Hammon Kamai I wrote for Musk.

In response, Musk said testing could begin later this year.

“Neuralink is working hard to ensure the safety of the implant and is in close communication with the FDA. If things go well, we may be able to do initial tests on humans later this year, ”wrote Musk.

Musk previously estimated that the company would start human testing of the technology in the second quarter of 2020, which did not work.

On Sunday, Musk revealed during an interview on the private social app Clubhouse that Neuralink placed a wireless implant in a monkey’s brain that allowed the animal to play video games using only the mind.

“You can’t even see where the neural implant was placed, except that it has a slight dark mohawk,” Musk said.

Neuralink has been testing these interfaces on animals for years. The company last year displayed pigs with computer chips in their brains and exhibited real-time neural signals from one of the animals.
